Information Literacy Program @ Skyline College

Collaborations

The library's information literacy program wholeheartedly aligns with Skyline College's mission of teaching and learning. Our primary objective is to seamlessly integrate information literacy throughout the academic curriculum, thereby fostering lifelong learning among students through effective teaching and guidance.

Outlined below are various collaborative avenues facilitated by our librarians for imparting information literacy concepts and research skills. We offer customized class sessions tailored to your specific course and assignments, either in-person or online.

Embedded Model: Our librarians enthusiastically collaborate with instructors to craft engaging and cooperative instruction that extends over the entire semester.

One or Two Workshops: We present one or two instructional workshops that encompass library orientations, research techniques, and resource evaluation. These workshops can be conveniently scheduled throughout the semester and can also be conducted asynchronously.

Assignment Design: Collaboratively, our librarians and instructors can design assignments that seamlessly integrate information literacy concepts such as research cycles, strategies, and resource appraisal. Past examples include annotated bibliographies, reflective research assignments, and more.

Guidelines for Requesting Library Instruction Sessions:

Notice Period: Please provide the library with at least two week's notice for your instruction request. This allows librarians to adequately prepare for your students' needs, assignments, and learning objectives.

Advance Booking: Requesting a session earlier gives you a better chance of securing your preferred time and room. Librarians' schedules tend to fill up quickly, particularly during weeks 3-6 of the semester.

Coordination with Assignments: Library instruction is most effective when it aligns with a specific assignment. Try to time your request when your students are beginning their research or when the session can connect to real-world applications.

Library Classroom Booking: For creating a more immersive learning experience, please contact the Library at (650) 738-4311 or your assigned librarian to reserve the Library classroom.

ACRL Framework Integration: The librarians can design special activities related to the Frames from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This framework provides a foundation for developing essential information literacy skills.

Topic Options: The librarians can create engaging sessions on various topics related to information literacy, such as fake news, fact-checking, scholarship as conversation, authority in information, information privileges, algorithmic bias, and more. Feel free to inquire about specific topics of interest.

Instructor's Attendance: In general, instructors are expected to attend the instruction sessions alongside their students. While librarians won't take attendance, your presence can help facilitate a productive learning environment.

Information Literacy Tutorial

You can access the Information Literacy Tutorial through Canvas Commons for importing into your course and customization. To upload the materials, follow the instructions provided in the guide "How to import Canvas Commons modules into your courses?".

What is Canvas Commons?

Canvas Commons is a platform that lets you share and access learning materials created by educators. You can view the materials at the following links:

  1. Library Workshop Materials for English & Social Sciences - Skyline College Library View Materials

  2. Skyline Library Online Resources & Services For Respiratory Care View Materials

Furthermore, there are four other options to integrate the Information Literacy Tutorial content into your Canvas course shell:

Option 1: Import tutorials with quizzes and an annotated bibliography assignment. To do this, a librarian needs to add you as a TA or librarian to the information literacy tutorial in Canvas. This will enable you to import all content, including quizzes and assignments, into your own Canvas course. Detailed instructions are available in the guide or at this link.

Option 2: Import videos and reading materials without quizzes or assignments using the external tool/LibApps in Canvas. Instructions are available at this link.

Option 3: Access the tutorial content directly at this link. You can use the videos and reading materials without quizzes or assignments by linking to specific parts of the guide.

Option 4: Import quizzes and assignments only into your Canvas course. Similar to Option 1, a librarian must add you as a TA or librarian to the information literacy tutorial in Canvas. This will allow you to import quizzes and assignments into your course. Detailed instructions can be found here.

Option 1 Instructions

Faculty members (ENGL 100/105 or any other course such as COMM, ECE, ESOL, etc.) can embed Skyline College Library's Information Literacy Tutorial.
