Requesting Materials from Skyline Library

This guide is for students who need technology, books and other items from Skyline Library. It explains how to request, pick up and return materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request an item from the Library? 

I submitted my requests. How long will it take until my items are ready? 

  • Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Some requests may be ready on the same day they're placed.  
  • Items in high demand may have a waiting list.  Items coming from another campus will take time to arrive.
  • You will receive an email notification from the library when your items are ready to pick up. 

Can I request textbooks or Course Reserves? 

  • Yes, students are able to request selected textbooks or Course Reserves.
  • These items have a short checkout period (usually 1-3 days depending on the available copies).  
  • Please return them on time so they can be used by other students in the class. 

Am I limited to items in Skyline Library's collections?

  • Students, faculty, and staff may request items from any SMCCD library and choose which campus they would like to pick up the items.  If you would like items from Cañada (click here) or CSM (click here) for more information.
  • Note:  Items being shipped between campuses can take a week or more to arrive. 

What if the item I want says "Not Available"?

  • You can still make a request.  You will be added to the queue for the item. 

I am a Community Member but not a Skyline student, faculty, or staff member. Can I request Skyline Library items?

  • Yes, community members can request books and DVDs in our circulating collection for check out.  Technology items and course reserves are available for in-library use only.
  • If you request an item through OneSearch, it must be picked up at Skyline College, Cañada College, or College of San Mateo. 
  • If you want to pick up the item at your public library, you must make the request through that library via interlibrary loan.  Contact your public library for assistance.

I received a notice that my items are ready for pickup. What do I do next?

  • When you receive an email notification that your library items are ready, you have 5 days to pick up your items.  
  • If you do not pick up your items within 5 days, your request will be cancelled.

How long do I have to pick up my items once they are ready?

  • You have 5 days to pick up your items. 
  • If you do not pick-up your items within 5 days, your request will be cancelled.

When can I pick up my items?

  • You can pick up items from the campus library you selected as your pickup location. Please check each library open hours.

How do I return my books/items/technology?

  • Return items to any SMCCD library during open hours.
  • The book drop is NOT open.
  • Do not leave items outside the library.  You are responsible for any lost or stolen items and will be charged replacement fees. 

How long are checkout times for Library items?

  • Most Skyline Library items check out for 3 weeks. 
  • DVD course reserves check out for 1 week.
  • Selected course reserves may be checked out overnight or for up to 3 weeks depending on the item, available copies and demand. 
  • Hotspots, Chromebooks and calculators check out for the semester.

May I renew items?

  • Books and DVDs in the circulating collection will automatically renew two times if no one else is waiting.  Check your library account for current due dates.
  • Other items may be eligible for a due date extension, if no one is waiting.  Contact the library for assistance.
