Social justice, open access, community, equity, and diversity are among our core values at Skyline College.
Through events and activities, Skyline College Library creates opportunities to deepen students’ understanding of social justice issues and expose students to diverse perspectives. Our programs aim to stimulate creativity and allow students to feel connected to our College’s mission and values.

Implemented in collaboration with students clubs and other departments, Library programs foster student-centered, cross-disciplinary, and multi-layered conversations that travel beyond the academic curriculum.
Skyline College Library presents event series throughout the academic year, often in coordination with other campus groups or departments. (Beginning in March 2020, events have been presented via Zoom).
Fake News While fake news is certainly not a new phenomenon, the 2016 presidential election brought it to the forefront. The Library offers programs and activities to enhance awareness and skills needed to critically evaluate news as a source of information.
Films & Film Festivals The Library screens films and series of films on relevant, current social justice themes. Following each film, students, faculty have an opportunity to engage in discussion, often including the filmmaker.
Human Library In these Library facilitated interactive sessions held once or twice per semester, “human books” — in the form of Skyline College students, faculty and staff and community members — are “loaned out” to readers just as libraries loan physical books to library patrons. Each reader selects or “check outs” a human book and the two engage in meaningful one-on-one conversations.
Poetry Corner Since October, 2018, Poetry Corner has offered frequent poetry readings and discussions featuring poets from many cultures and walks of life. All poetry events are open to the Skyline College and San Mateo County communities.
Skyline Stories of Self-fullness A new discussion series presents opportunities to hear other's stories and perhaps share your own. Each session explores a different topic, with group discussions designed to build connection, community and expand understanding; to find camaraderie and reduce isolation; to exchange ideas through stories. The series is facilitated by Skyline College Library, Personal Counseling and Active Minds Club, taking place in person at the Library and open to all members of the Skyline College community.
