Khoury discusses the fragments of the nakba. One must note that this way of seeing the struggle in Palestine was also loaded with direct symbolism in Palestinian literature. The first Palestinian novella narrating aspects of the nakba was written by Ghassan Kanafani and published in 1963, the same year Yehoshua's novella was published. It was loaded with a similarly heavy allegorical aspect. "Men in the Sun" relates the story of three Palestinian generations in search of individual salvation, who die tragically before obtaining the chance to escape the water tank in which they were hiding in order to be smuggled to Kuwait.
