Since October, 2018, the Library's Poetry Corner Series has offered monthly poetry reading events featuring a range of poets. Events are open to the Skyline College Community. Instructors may also sign up to participate as a class for readings and discussions.
Poetry Corner sessions provide a safe and creative space for students, staff and faculty to express ideas, read original works, declare spoken word and engage in challenging discussions.

Ancient Enmity [Anthology]: International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong

International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong (IPNHK) is an award-winning biennial poetry festival established by the renowned contemporary Chinese poet Bei Dao. Since its debut in 2009, IPNHK has become the most influential series of international poetry events in sinophone areas, delivered internationally acclaimed poets' thoughts and ideas about poetry to contemporary China, and stimulated Chinese poets' reflection upon their own conditions of reading world poetry. Following the enormous success of previous editions, IPNHK's 2017 event is scheduled to happen from 22-26 November in Hong Kong, with the theme "Ancient Enmity," and invites more than twenty poets and lyricists from different parts of the world to share and read their works in the hope of encouraging exchange among poets and lyricists. Poets include Gabeba Baderoon (South Africa), Javier Bello (Chile), Chen Dongdong (China), Jérôme Game (France), Major Jackson (U.S.), George Szirtes (UK), Anja Utler (Germany), Haris Vlavianos (Greece), and others. The IPNHK anthology includes selections of the most internationally acclaimed contemporary poetry by the invited poets, accompanied by unique Chinese and English translations in bilingual or trilingual formats.
The Whole Island: Six Decades of Cuban Poetry, A Bilingual Anthology

Cuba's cultural influence throughout the Western Hemisphere, and especially in the United States, has been disproportionally large for so small a country. This landmark volume is the first comprehensive overview of poetry written over the past sixty years. Presented in a beautiful Spanish-English en face edition, The Whole Island makes available the astonishing achievement of a wide range of Cuban poets, including such well-known figures as Nicol#65533;s Guill#65533;n, Jos#65533; Lezama Lima, and Nancy Morej#65533;n, but also poets widely read in Spanish who remain almost unknown to the English-speaking world--among them Fina Garc#65533;a Marruz, Jos#65533; Kozer, Ra#65533;l Hern#65533;ndez Nov#65533;s, and #65533;ngel Escobar--and poets born since the Revolution, like Rogelio Saunders, Omar P#65533;rez, Alessandra Molina, and Javier Marim#65533;n. Poetry As Research: Exploring second language poetry writing

Poetry as Research develops an approach that allows poetry writing to be used as a research method for exploring questions relating to second language learners and more broadly for studies within the humanities and social sciences. The book investigates the characteristics of poetry writing and situates poetry writing as a qualitative, arts-based, research process. The book utilizes computational linguistics, qualitative, bibliographic, and philosophical methods and investigates the process of writing poetry, the textual and literary characteristics of second language poetry, poetic identity and inquiry. The developed methodology is exemplified through a poetic inquiry of the study abroad experiences of ESL students. The book provides a comprehensive, informed and innovative approach to the investigation of understandings of personal experience. This book should be of interest to the fields of applied linguistics, stylistics, literary studies, creative writing and composition as well as anyone interested in using writing as a research method.
